Dr Pablo Sanchez visits the studio as we explore congenital CMV infection. This condition is a leading cause of hearing loss. Early treatment might preserve hearing, but few states test when newborns fail to pass their hearing screen. PURPOSE
This online activity will identify and explore issues related to the practice of pediatric medicine in primary care and subspecialty settings.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Primary care physicians, pediatric subspecialists, and other health care professionals who provide care for pediatric patients should participate in this activity.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the cause and typical presentation of symptomatic congenital CMV infection.
- Perform targeted CMV screening for neonates with isolated sensorineural hearing loss.
- Coordinate care for infants and children impacted by congenital CMV infection.
- Counsel families on the longterm sequela of severe disease.
